The present-day mass migration of people is a new tea-culture in the making. It brings new life to tea culture around the world. The lines on the map represent the global flow of customs and flavors.

background

In the Teatide map, I chart the current migration patterns around the Mediterranean sea. Instead of looking as migration of people, what if we understand it through movement of flavors. I looked into the Tea-drinking culture in the most deeply affected countries facing displacement of people. In Syria, Black tea with Hibiscus flowers Zouhourat is a common practice. Similarily, in Mali mint is used widely in tea and cinnamon in Sudan.

Tidal effects arise through constellations in positive-negative manipulation of point and lines. After doing a lot of experiments with line drawings I got some exciting interrelations between points and circles. Walter Diethelm’s studies on circle helped me create the tidal and migration effects.

For migration, I wanted to show movement in the cups. In order to do that, I created cups that connect to each other. I also added an exaggerated lip to the cups to emphasize the tidal effect. I created a two-part mold with three different cylindrical shapes. Each shape had a different amount of swelling.  Image on the right, illustrate my process from prototyping to the execution. The final pieces were glazed with white Terra Siglata on top of naked white porcelain.
